Hockey - 1st VII IAPS Tournament at Bishop's Stortford (A), Wednesday 1 October 2014
Holmwood started the day with great gusto and, within five minutes of the first game against Broomwood Hall, were 3-0 up thanks to 2 from Beth I and 1 from Annabel H. Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain the lead and, with errors in defence, Broomwood were able to equalise.
With a game off to regroup and reflect on our performance, we started the second game against Bede’s with great passion. The physical size of their players was a little offputting and most challenges resulted in Holmwood girls coming off worse. Bede's scored 3 strong goals against us. However, as a team performance this was a much better game.
The final game of the group stage was an exciting evenly matched one against Bishop’s Stortford. Realising that they needed a win to come second in their section, the girls fought admirably and made numerous shots on target but luck was not with them and we were left with a 0-0 draw. This put Holmwood third in the section and they had to play the second placed team in section B, St.John’s.
St John's was clearly an experienced team with strong confident players and they were able to drive through our defence to score 6 goals. The one consolation was an excellent goal by Sarah B who slipped the ball past the keeper by the right post exactly as practised in the warm up!
It was a great day out with this dedicated and hardworking group and every player gave 100%, whether winning or losing, especially captain Annabel H who led with enthusiasm and empathy beyond her years.
