U13 Rugby Tour to Holland, 21 to 25 October 2011
Game 1 vs R C Dukes
It was agreed with the Dukes' coach and referee before the game that, as we were the guests, we would play in the style that the opposition have trained (ie, they wanted to play 12-a-side rather than the 15-a-side that Holmwood were used to plus they wanted to play across half a pitch and not do conversions). It was clear from the start that Holmwood were a lot more organised as a team; this was particularly noticeable at the rucks and mauls. However, the Dutch were a very tall side and they were very strong in the scrums and lineouts. In open play, Holmwood controlled the whole game and, for the short periods that they did not have the ball, defended with great aggression until they had won the ball back. The game was very enjoyable for all and lots of substitutions were made to ensure everyone had a good run. Tries were scored by Jame P (3), Patrick I, Ben S, Oliver H (2), James C and Harry E. The final score was 45-10 to Holmwood.
Men of the match – Ben S and Ollie H
After this game, the Dutch coach asked if it was possible to have another 20 minute game against his other team. As we had only played 12-a-side, it seemed a good idea to let the players have as much rugby as possible. This team were not as strong as the first team, but they did have some big, strong runners that made sure the Holmwood defence was tested. Try scorers in this game were Ollie H, Harry E, William C, Patrick I and Ben S. Final score: won 25-0.
Men of the match – Edward Gibson and R. Parry
Game 2 vs Club Octopus
After welcoming us into their clubhouse to watch the RWC final, and offering us breakfast, it was clear to see that this was a well established team who were well respected within their leagues.
Holmwood had plenty of time to have a good stretch, a thorough warm-up and a good set of team runs. Holmwood started strongly with good field position. James C drove through the middle of the Octopus defence to score under the posts. Harry E then picked up at base of a ruck and was pushed over the line by his supporting players. Ben S then picked up from the back of the scrum and ran through a gap in the defence to score. Harry then scored again with excellent build-up play from the backs. Harry then broke the tackle to score. Edward G cleared up a messy clearance kick from Octopus and ran for the space. Then, by drawing the player and passing, he created the space for Patrick I to score in the corner. Robert P was at the end of an excellent passage of back play and interlinking passes to score. Ollie H used quick thinking to score from a quick tap and go on to score a penalty. Jamie W then scored two excellent tries, both caught by a forward and then offloaded to a back, passed down the line for Jamie to finish in the corner. On the other wing, Patrick I used his pace to go round the outside of the defence and scored his second try of the day. The final try was created by James P who knocked a well weighted kick over the Octopus defence which was collected well by Ben A.
There were some excellent conversions from Ben A (some from the touch line!) who in total scored 23 points.
