Rugby - U11 A XII vs Felsted (A), Wednesday 10 September 2014

We arrived at Felsted School enjoying weather more suited to the cricket season. The ground was hard and the grass was short. For many of the boys this was the first time that they had played together.

Although there was a slight discrepancy in the rules that were to be played, both teams gave it their all. Felsted had some excellent attacking runners.  However, they were met by the excellent tackles of the Holmwood boys. The Felsted team was relatively the same as the team they fielded last year; this was demonstrated in their field positions and knowledge of how one another played.

The game was won by the more experienced team. Holmwood gave it their all and improvements were noted throughout the game.  Despite this, the Holmwood boys have a huge amount of talented individuals and, in time, when they begin to play as a team, I am confident success will not be far away.

Well done to the boys on a tough first game, you stuck at it and your ‘never give in’ attitude was admirable.

Result: Felsted 29-0 Holmwood

Rugby - U11 B XII vs Felsted (A), Wednesday 10 September 2014

The Colt Bs were unlucky to concede a try in the last minute in an entertaining first match.  Both teams were rusty but Holmwood began a fightback after conceding 2 soft tries.  The forwards made some powerful runs, with Oliver R scoring in the corner.  Ben N came close twice.  Oliver J scored a fine blindside try from the scrum and Archie S grew in confidence and ran operations as first receiver.

With the score at 12-12 at half-time, Felsted scored but then Ben N stormed through to score again for Holmwood, supported well by Max D, Charley G and Ethan W.  With only a few minutes left, Felsted scored in the corner to snatch victory.

Charley G converted 2 tries and the Year 5s showed great commitment when it mattered.  A promising start made by all the boys!

Result:  Felsted 24 - 19 Holmwood

The first match of the season was away at Felsted.  It was a warm afternoon and the Cs produced a good team performance.  The boys scored 7 tries in total with 2 conversions.  Lance and AJ scored 2 tries each with Peter, Archie and the captain, Joshua, all scoring 1 try each.

Matthew and Oliver made significant contributions in the line-out and scrums.  Cole, Noah, Nicholas, Oscar, Elliot and James assisted the try scorers in attack and defence.  The team's passing and running lines throughout the game were particularly impressive - well done!

Rugby - U11 D XII vs Felsted (A), Wednesday 10 September 2014

Holmwood travelled to Felsted looking for a solid performance to start the term on a positive note.  Dominic T was named as captain prior to the match.  Holmwood started well with some positive running and some solid tackling. Cedd R got Holmwood off the mark with a fine individual run beating several Felsted players. Oscar C was a demon in defence, tackling everything in his path.  It was he who add a second for Holmwood, after another fine run from deep.  Felsted scored two tries to get back into the game but Dominic T scored  to make it 15-10 at half-time.

The second half was a close affair with both teams taking it in turns to score.  Oscar C scored a further 2 tries and Dominic T scored a great try after some fantastic support play.

Result: Felsted 25 - 30 Holmwood
