Soccer - U9 A & C VIIs vs South Lee (A)

Holmwood’s final match of the Autumn term was an away fixture against South Lee. After the long journey the boys took a while to settle and found themselves a goal down after a shot from distance lobbed Patrick A and bounced into the roof of the net. Holmwood responded well and started to play their normal passing game. Holmwood hit the post twice before half time but nearly fell a further goal behind as South Lee’s second shot of the game cannoned off of the crossbar. Holmwood dominated the rest of the first half but could not find the equaliser.

Half time : Holmwood 0 South Lee 1

The second half continued as the first half ended. Holmwood dominated possession and created lots of chances but could not find the finishing touch. It was Henry D who broke the deadlock after a clearance fell to him midway into the South Lee half. He got the ball out of his feet and smashed a low shot along the ground that beat the South Lee keeper at the near post. Holmwood continue to search for the winner, a clearance for Henry D dropped in front of Ned N and sat up nicely to be hit on the volley. He did just that from some 20 yards. The ball flew like a rocket and dipped at the last second only to crash against the bar. Rufus C made an impressive debut for the A’s and look at home on the left of midfield.

On another day the score could have been at least 4 -1 to Holmwood, a combination of good goalkeeping and near misses meant that the boys last game finished in a draw.

I would like to thank all of the boys for their hard work and willingness to improve during the term and also the parent who have supported so enthusiastically in all weathers.

 Well done

Holmwood played hard and determined football at South Lee today. Despite their incredible effort the opposition proved to be far stronger. Holmwood didn't give up and William T, the captain, was ruthless with his tackles and led by example. Josiah C and
Ed G also tried hard in defence and cleared the ball very effectively. Owen J, Damon B and Harry P all held their position and tackled hard. The goalkeepers Fergus S and Josh R both found it hard to keep out the goals, but tried hard. Christopher T was quick and hungry for the ball but found it hard to penetrate their defence. Holmwood U9 C team have come a long way since the start of term and should feel very proud of their progress it has been a pleasure coaching them. Thank you and well done!

Final Result:  Holmwood 0 - 5 South Lee
