Holmwood retain U10 cricket trophy!
Cricket - U10 "6-a-side" Tournament at Ipswich Prep School (A), Saturday 18 June 2011
Holmwood House U10 Colts managed to dodge the showers to retain the Ipswich School "6-a-side" Tournament trophy.
With only 4 competing schools, it was decided that all the sides would play each other with the top 2 sides playing a final and the 3rd and 4th teams playing off for third place.
Holmwood's first game was against The Abbey who decided to bat first. All the Holmwood bowlers kept a good line with Teddy B and Charlie S being particularly impressive as The Abbey were restricted to 29-1 from their five overs. Patrick F and George L were both undefeated - and hit their first sixes of the season - as Holmwood impressively chased down the score in 2.4 overs.
In the second game, against Ipswich, Holmwood batted first. Patrick F was caught and bowled in the first over. Sol H then joined George L and struck four boundaries as Holmwood struggled to 34-1. In response, Holmwood knew they had to bowl very accurately to restrict Ipswich. Patrick F, Teddy B, Ollie A and Charlie S all bowled very accurate overs and it was left to George L to bowl the last over with Ipswich needing 9 to win. 5 accurate balls left Ipswich still needing 5 to win with 1 ball left. However, George bowled a wide, which was a 2 run penalty and the requirement to bowl again. With the tension mounting (certainly amongst the onlooking parents), George held his nerve and his legal delivery for only a single meant Holmwood had won by 1 run.
As Holmwood and St Margaret's had won both of their games, it was sensibly decided that their encounter would become the final as another heavy shower made playing conditions very difficult. Holmwood had saved their best batting for this game with both Patrick F and George L hitting boundaries. George L hit another six and 2 fours as he retired on 22. Patrick was bowled by a ball that kept low, but Holmwood had amassed a very impressive 50-2 from 5 overs.
Both Patrick F and Teddy B put on an excellent show once again when bowling, conceding only 4 runs from their overs. This left St Margaret's with a mountain to climb and, although they became more aggressive, hitting boundaries and running recklessly, they fell short of Holmwood's total reaching 48 to enable Holmwood to win by 8 runs.
All the Holmwood boys played with great spirit and skill.
They certainly deserved their win on the day which was so well run by their hosts.
Well done boys!
