Holmwood win Hockey Tournament!

At this time of the year the Under 11 girls participate in the Brandeston Hall tournament. This is the twelfth year of the tournament which has sadly lacked the name of Holmwood House on the trophy.

Our first match was against South Lee and after a nervy start came out 4-0 winners, thanks to goals from Alexandra Went and Phoebe Burns, both of whom scored twice.  Our next match was against Ipswich High and both teams had chances to win, but a draw was the correct result.  This meant that in our next game against Widford Lodge we knew we had to score as many goals as possible to qualify for the semi-final. After 2 quick goals from Phoebe Burns and Alexandra Went, Widford scored on the counter to put us under pressure, but Holnwood responded well and scored 7 more goals through Lottie Riley, Phoebe Burns and Alexandra Went.  This result put us into the semi-final versus The Abbey and, after a battle for possession; Holmwood scored 3 goals to progress to the final.

In the final we were against hosts, Brandeston Hall, who made an excellent start.  However, thanks to some fine defending from Daisy Gemmel, Elizabeth Skells and Molly Redgrove, we stopped Brandeston from scoring.  As the ball came out of defence our centre-half Georgia Geary made an excellent pass through to forwards and after some fine saves from Brandeston's goalkeeper, Rosie Marks finished putting Holmwood into the lead.  Back came Brandeston and despite every effort of the team, they squeezed the ball into goal to end the half one a piece.

The second half was a tense affair, but within 30 seconds of coming on Lottie Riley scored passed Brandeston's goalkeeper with a few minutes remaining.  Despite a final short-corner from Brandeston, we got the ball out of play to win the match 2-1.

Well done girls, a thoroughly well deserved performance.  Thank you to all the parents for coming to support and share the anxious moments throughout and, of course, the jubilations!
