Holmwood's double win at Framlingham!
Congratulations to both the U11 cricket and tennis teams who won the tournaments at Framlingham College!
Cricket - U11 "8-a-side" Tournament at Framlingham (A), Friday 10 June 2011
Holmwood were grouped with Taverham Hall and Brandeston Hall in the group stage of this tournament. An excellent batting performance in their first game against a very good Taverham Hall meant that we had scored 79 for our 8 overs. Taverham chased down our total with some powerful shots, but fell short by 7 runs to get us off to a great start.
Brandeston Hall were next and, on this occasion, Holmwood scored 81 with some superb batting from both Ben A and Philipp C, in particular, and some intelligent running. Once again, excellent bowling ensured a good win for Holmwood. Holmwood had topped the group to join the other group winners, Widford Lodge and Town Close, to contest the cup competition.
Against Widford Lodge, Holmwood bowled first and were very impressive, restricting the opposition to only 30 runs. As the weather closed in, the games were reduced from five 8 ball overs to five 6 ball overs. In reply, Ben A and Philipp C managed to take us close with Ollie B closing the game out.
Holmwood batted first in the final 'winner take all' game versus Town Close. The boys put up an excellent performance with a score of 54 runs. All the boys bowled well in the final, with Ollie H taking 2 wickets for 0 runs, to see us well on the way to victory! Town Close managed 28 runs in reply.
Team: Ollie B (captain), Ollie H, Ben A, Philipp C, Patrick F, Charlie S, Robert P, William K and Eddie G
This has been a great day for the boys who played some superb cricket. The fielding was
outstanding in every game and they certainly deserved to win!

Tennis - Girls' U11 Tournament at Framlingham (A), Friday, 10 June 2011
Six schools took part in a round robin tournament with each school playing two double and four singles matches against each other. This added up to 60 games per person! The Holmwood girls started tentatively against Brandeston B team, getting used to the astroturf surface and low bounce balls. However, they soon realised that they had the upper hand and won every game, both doubles and singles. Against Widford Lodge the girls played superbly and managed another 6-0 victory. We went to lunch feeling very confident, but knew that the strongest teams were yet to come.
The Abbey put up a strong fight with both Elizabeth S and Georgia G ending 3-3, but Charlotte O and Minnie B won easily to put us 5-1 ahead. Town Close had a Norfolk county player as first seed, but clever play from Elizabeth and Minnie, avoiding her at all costs, meant that we again won both doubles. In the singles, poor Elizabeth struggled against their number one, but all the others won 6-0.
Going into the final game, Holmwood were 2 rubbers ahead of Brandeston A, our final opponents. The rain lashed down but the girls were so determined to win and did not complain once. We were 1-1 after the doubles and once again Elizabeth faced a county player at number 1. She unfortunately lost, but the the other three Holmwood players won their matches enabling us to take the title - we were the champions!
These four girls were a delight to be with throughout the day and made me so proud.
They were the only team to remain undefeated.
Charlotte O was awarded the honour of Player of the Tournament
for her consistent play.
