Holmwood win 1st XI Cricket Tournament!

Cricket - 1st XI Tournament at Brandeston Hall (A), Thursday 18 June 2010

Round 1 - Holmwood vs Culford

Holmwood batted first and got off to a great start with Francis Hunt (21) only losing one wicket, Oliver Grayson (6).  Nicholas Harrington (18) pushed on with Oliver Carlstroem who made a blistering 34*.  Nico Waddington then came to the crease and smashed a magnificent 53* (with 3 sixes on the trot) to take Holmwood up to a massive 161-3 after 12 eight ball overs.

In reply, Culford started well but when the openers fell after 6 overs, the rest of the team collapsed for 105-8.  Samuel Wallace (2-22), Nicholas Harrington (0-23), Benjamin Allison (3-20) and Oliver Grayson (1-32) did the damage.

Result:  won by 56 runs
Holmwood 161-3       Culford 105-8

Round 2 - Holmwood vs Bishop's Stortford

Bishop's Stortford batted first and played well for 97 but the excellent Holmwood bowling by Samuel Wallace (2-19), Nicholas Harrington (2-23) and Benjamin Allison (1-18), combined with some tight fielding by Holmwood, meant they were restricted to a run per ball.

Holmwood's reply was awe-inspiring entertainment!  Francis Hunt smashed his way to 55 before skying one.  He hit 5 sixes, 3 of which were one after another.  Some very strong support from Oliver Grayson (32*) meant Holmwood cruised to victory.

Result:  won by 10 wickets
Holmwood  98-1       Bishop's Stortford 97-8

THE FINAL - Holmwood vs Norwich

Nicholas Harrington batted really well before being run out needlessly for 27.  Francis Hunt (14) was batting well before being caught.  Nico Waddington (27) played another great innings before being very well stumped.  Fergus Nightingale (14) looked good before being bowled by the Norwich leg spinner.  With a few extras, Holmwood scrambled to 119 - a good all-round effort from their 96 balls (12 x 8 ball overs).

It was all to play for and Holmwood had to bowl straight and full to win.  They did just that and, together with some superb all-round fielding, the bowlers were able to concentrate on their task.  Oliver Grayson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-12 followed by Benjamin Allison (2-18).  Oliver Carlstroem took a stunning catch on the boundary low down and ran out Norwich No 7 with a direct hit to really peg back the Norwich attack.  The runs dried up and Norwich were left stranded, 21 runs short.

Result:  won by 21 runs
Holmwood  119-8       Norwich 88-9

A fantastic tournament - well done, Holmwood - winning the cup for the third time in a row!
