Senior Netball Tour to Malta

Friday 18 February to Monday 21 February

Twelve very excited Holmwood girls braved an intrepid 9 hour journey to Malta (via Palermo due to thunderstorms!) arriving with lots of energy and anticipation of some good matches.

On Saturday, we travelled to a local netball club where we played the Fundamentals who ranged from U9 to U11 to U14.  Holmwood, having 11 fit players, changed the team around so that everyone could play, as did the Fundamentals, so all the girls could have a match.  Five periods of 10 minutes were played, with Holmwood winning 7-0, 8-0, 5-0, 3-1 and 1-0 (against the opposition's older players).

As we missed Friday's match due to our late arrival, Miss Little and Mrs Austin pursuaded the Pro-Actives team (who arrived at the sports centre to train) to play the Holmwood girls.  Their players were aged between 15 and 21 years old.  In the first 15 minute period, Holmwood played amazing netball and were leading 7-5 at half-time.  Both teams swapped their players and then Pro-Active gave us an excellent display of 'senior netball', taking the lead and eventually winning 16-8.  However, the whole match was a great experience for the Holmwood team.

On Sunday, having watched the top two teams in the first division compete in the play-offs, Holmwood played NRG, a local team of 14-15 year olds.  This was another brilliant match and valuable experience for the Holmwood team who gave 110%, never gave up and learnt a huge amount from the match.  Despite the score:

6-10 to NRG at 1/4 time
10-22 at 1/2 time
12-27 at 3/4 time
14-33 result at full-time

it was a brilliant match!  Holmwood were simply 'outsized' by NRG's shooters and defence.  Our level of netball down the rest of the court was amazing.  In fact, I think many of the girls surprised themselves with how well they played.

Squad:   Evie D (Captain),  Emma W (Vice-Captain), Claudia C, Izzy M, Imogen M, Lucy F, Sophie L, Saskia V, Molly G, Elizabeth D, Olivia W, Luella I (non-playing)

A hugely successful tour - well done girls!
