U8 Tag Rugby & Netball Tournaments

Saturday 20 March 2010

Rugby:  The fourth annual Holmwood House U8 Tag Rugby Tournament took place on Saturday 20 March. Sponsored for the first time by Amy Blackwell of Evergreen Clinics (sports injury and wellness centre).  Ten teams from eight schools participated with all matches keenly contested.  Each team played 4 matches in a round robin format during the pool stage.  The winners of the pools were St.Margarets' and Barnardiston Hall's 'A' team.

In a very tight cup final, Barnardiston emerged as worthy winners with their captain, Monty Fenwick-Clennell, a stand out performer who was awarded the man of the match.  Second place in the pools went to The Abbey and Orwell Park. The Abbey emerged as victors of the Bowl Trophy in a 'golden try' situation after scores were locked at full-time. The Plate trophy was played by third placed Finborough and Ipswich Prep. Finborough winning another titanic struggle, again decided by a 'golden try'.

All players should be congratulated on the spirit, endeavour and sportsmanship shown throughout the tournament. The teams from Holmwood House, New Hall and Barnardiston B, although not qualifying for the finals, all exhibited moments of excellent play.  All players were given mini rugby balls, provided by Ram Rugby, as a momento of the day.                            Nic Lloyd

Netball:  The first ever Holmwood House Under 8 Netball Tournament took place on Saturday 20 March. Sponsored for the first time by Amy Blackwell of Evergreen Clinics (sports injury and wellness centre). Six teams entered including two from Holmwood. The girls were all incredibly excited and approached the morning with superb team spirit. All the teams played six minutes each way against the five other teams. Despite the weather getting gradually worse throughout the morning, the girls were able to stay warm and gain a true experience of the game.  All the teams displayed an incredibly high standard of skills for their age group with spectacular goals being scored in all of the matches.  St. Margaret's were undefeated throughout and were the overall winners with Holmwood House Blue team taking second place.

All the girls received a mini netball from Barrington Sport.com as a memento of the day.

I would like to thank all the schools and their staff for participating and helping to make the event such a great success. The parents should be congratulated for their enthusiastic support from beginning to end and I hope that they enjoyed the tournament as much as the girls.                                                                                                                Susie Goldring
