U9 Netball Tournament Winners

Netball - U9 A VII Tournament at Brandeston Hall (A), Wednesday 5 October 2011

Twelve Year 4 girls went to Brandeston Hall to play in their U9 netball tournament. Holmwood House were drawn in group 1 which included Taverham Hall, South Lee (last year’s winners), The Abbey, Barnardiston Hall and Culford.

The first match was against Taverham Hall. Holmwood started very energetically, scoring an amazing 9 goals in just eight minutes, winning 9-0.  Beth I and Millie A-G were in fine form!  In the second match, Holmwood again took an immediate lead and maintained their dominance, winning 6-0. There was no break between this match and the next which was against Barnardiston Hall, and some of the girls were getting tired.  Holmwood tried very hard but it was a scrappy match, with an injury, and we lost 2-3.  A fourth match followed straight away, and the girls put the previous loss behind them to beat Culford 5-0.  Lili O was extremely strong in defence and Rosie B ran tirelessly around the court in C position.

On the adjacent court, we could see that The Abbey team were winning all of their matches and they were our next opponents.  It was clear that we needed to beat them in order to progress into the final.  A tremendous team effort, with all seven girls playing brilliantly, resulted in a 4-1 victory.  This meant that both The Abbey and Holmwood House were tied on 12 points in their section and, after a nervous few minutes, Holmwood were declared winners of the section as they had the better goal difference (and, of course, we had beaten The Abbey).

All of the girls were ecstatic to be in the final.

Holmwood played against Brandeston Hall in the final.  At full time the score was 1-1 so an extra period of 5 minutes was played. The girls made a huge effort and pulled ahead to lead 3-1, 4-1, 4-2, 5-2 and finally 5-3.

This is the first time Holmwood House have won this tournament.  It is a tremendous achievement,
particularly as all 12 girls in the year group took part, rather than just the 7 strongest players.
All the girls received a certificate and a medal, and the team was presented with the silver trophy.

Wow - what an exciting afternoon!
