Year 7 Science & Latin

A perfect collaboration

Earlier this week the science and Latin departments collaborated to build a Roman Wall.

In Latin, the Year 7 pupils had been studying Pompeii. As part of this, they had looked at Roman building techniques, particularly the innovation of concrete. The basic recipe is; sand, ash and quicklime.

“opus caementicium”

Whilst in Science they had been investigating the limestone cycle and how quicklime is formed by heating calcium carbonate.

We built our wall in the “opus latericium” style using flat bricks and our own Roman concrete mixture.
