  • Friday 10 July 2020 From the Headmaster.... Dear ParentsAs we come to the end of another school year, it will certainly be one we will all remember.  Thank you for the kind good wishes and letters of appreciation we have received this week.  It is very much appreciated. The qualities we have seen in our children and staff are fittingly aligned with the Holmwood values of resilience, resourcefulness, responsibility, reasoning and reflection.  An enormous amount of care, courtesy and consideration was also required to manage the online learning experience of the final term and I am thrilled to hear from parents time and time again that the programme in place for Holmwood House children surpassed anything else experienced in the local area.  This reflects our approach to your children's education under normal circumstances and the dedication and resolve of the staff have been outstanding for which I thank them enormously. You will not be surprised, therefore, to know that I am encouraging the staff to
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Year 8 Year 8 completed their final week, which included an incredible 'Home' Bake-Off, plus enjoyed a last night of boarding under the stars!
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Year 4 The children in Year 4 have been reflecting on their time in lockdown and writing letters to themselves, poems and artwork. They have also been busy making models of electrical circuits as part of their Electricity topic this week.
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Year 3 Year 3 took part in their annual handwriting competition, this year it was about sand as we couldn’t make it to the beach!
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Phase 2 Sports Day On Tuesday afternoon Phase 2 children participated in an afternoon of sports, races and fun outdoor games. It was a bit like a separate but simultaneous, in zones, Sports Day!
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Year 1 Year 1 had a fun science afternoon this week, making parachutes and testing them from the top of the fort. They discovered that the larger parachutes were the best. A peg near the bottom of the strings slowed the parachutes down and allowed them to fall gently to the ground.
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Nursery News This week in Poppies we had lots of fun making precious stones using nail polish to paint them. We then practised our fine motor skills applying nail polish to a cardboard hand. We spent lots of time in the garden, digging, organising campfires, riding the bikes and playing with the dinosaurs and happy land.
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Ballet, Drama & Musical Theatre Thank you to all those who took part with the ballet, drama and musical theatre online lessons. It has been lovely to see you all singing, dancing and acting. I hope to see you back in “real time” in September.
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Pupil Achievements Golden Awards are made weekly to individuals in each class based on the Golden Rules. The following children received a Golden Award during Week 11.
  • Friday 10 July 2020 Maths & English Summer Camp We are delighted to be opening our doors to Year 5 pupils from outside of Holmwood House for our maths and English camp over the summer.
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 From the Headmaster.... Dear ParentsAs we look ahead to the final week of the school year I wanted to clarify arrangements for the end of term celebrations.  Sadly, we will not be able to be together for these events but hope that the technology will enable us to create a sense of community nonetheless. A pre-recorded Pre-Prep Prize Giving will be live streamed on Friday 10 July at 4pm to enable pupils and parents to watch it together from home.  A pre-recorded Prep Speech Day will be live streamed on Saturday 11 July at 10.30am.  Links will be sent out in due course.  (Videos of both events will be avilable for parents to watch at another time if they are unable to watch the ceremonies at the alloted times.)Sadly, we will not be able to award prizes for every child in the school in this format and I have explained to the children what prizes will be awarded, namely Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for the top, second and third highest star counts in each class or Element, as well as Class P
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 Year 8 Challenge Weeks Year 8 have come to the end of their second Challenge Week today and have endured fierce competition so far in a bridge building challenge based on one of Dyson's challenges ...
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 Year 5 As you can see with these star jumps, Year 5 PE lessons are still going strong at home!
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 Year 3 On Monday, all of the Year 3 children took part in the annual Year 3 Reading Competition. This was a new challenge with children participating both at home and in school. And a few weeks ago we asked the children in Year 3 to write a thank-you letter as part of their English lesson. Leo P chose to write to the housekeeping team at Colchester Hospital, and they kindly wrote back!
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 Year 1 Year 1 have been learning about symmetry during maths sessions this week. The children used natural materials that they found in the Year 1 outside area to make symmetrical patterns, and were very resourceful in their use of sticks, leaves and pieces of bark.
  • Thursday 9 July 2020 Nursery News In Bluebells this week we have been developing our physical skills, from cutting out a picture to drawing over some tracing patterns. In the garden we have practised balancing on one foot and rolling the big tyres around.

  • Friday 26 June 2020 Year 3 Year 3 have been busy focusing on poetry in our English lessons. We reflected on our unique experiences of Lockdown and then wrote some fantastic poems to record this historical time in our lives. Here are just a few from our talented poets!
  • Friday 26 June 2020 Year 2 This week the children in Year 2 have been enjoying learning about traditional outdoor games. Our classmates at home have been researching and playing games their mums and dads used to play, while at school we have been having fun with socially distanced games in the sunshine!
  • Friday 26 June 2020 Nursery News Bluebells have been exploring space this week. We have drawn pictures of rockets, all of which have been amazing. As the weather has been lovely we have had lots of fun in the garden, making patterns with construction, balancing and lots of water play.
  • Friday 26 June 2020 Pupil News Charlotte G has continued playing chess through lockdown! She played in the Megafinal last weekend, and won 4 out of 6 games to qualify for the national Gigafinal.

  • Monday 15 June 2020 Pupil Achievements We are pleased to announce this terms' Sports Captains, as well as the Golden Awards given out in Pre-Prep this week.
  • Monday 15 June 2020 Year 1 - Outdoor Learning During outdoor learning this week, Year 1 used sticks to create a picture frame which they then filled with all sorts of natural materials to create a rustic picture or pattern.
  • Monday 15 June 2020 Year 3 - Cooking Year 3 have introduced a weekly cookery session, and the results of the first week's bread challenge were fantastic, so well done everyone! We had a range of flavours including chocolate, banana, raisin and seeded, as well as a trial using a slow cooker.
  • Monday 15 June 2020 Year 4 - Angles & Symmetry Year 4 have been classifying shapes and having fun applying their learning by looking closely for angles and symmetry at home and outdoors.
  • Monday 15 June 2020 Year 8 French This week 8X have embraced their creative skills and have enjoyed being a bit more "hands on" in their lessons. They were given a choice of indulging in some French cuisine or making a model of the Eiffel Tower using tinfoil, or both! Bravo 8X - some delicious crêpes and some imaginative Eiffel Towers!

  • Monday 15 June 2020 Art Lana shared one of her wonderful pieces of art with us this week, demonstrating great use of different types of brush stroke.
  • Monday 15 June 2020 Nursery News The babies have continued to settle back into nursery life. This week they have enjoyed playing with different themed tuff trays, discovering bugs hidden in shredded paper, as well as construction vehicles and dinosaurs buried amongst different textured materials such as sand, salt, rice and pasta. They have also been drawing and exploring playdough and gloop.

  • Friday 5 June 2020 Pre-Reception It has been lovely to welcome the children back to Pre-Reception this week. We have enjoyed lots of messy play and catching up with friends.
  • Friday 5 June 2020 Year 3 In Global Studies the Year 3 children were finding out about the Hindu festival of Divalli. During their research they discovered that Rangoli patterns are often created as part of the celebrations.
  • Friday 5 June 2020 Nursery News First week back at Nursery and the babies have settled in amazingly. They have enjoyed exploring the garden, digging together and playing in the new teepee, along with painting, shaving foam, messy play and completing puzzles together.

  • Friday 27 March 2020 Thank You NHS Our children on-site wanted to send a Thank You message to all NHS workers at the current time.
  • Friday 27 March 2020 On-Site We have had some Critical Key Workers’ children on site this week and as well as following their curriculum, they have had lots of fun with various activities, including hat making, balloon modelling, Mr Lesiak’s Tennis Ball Challenge, a ‘distance picnic’ and even tried ‘distance basketball’.
  • Friday 27 March 2020 Year 1 We have received some lovely photos of the children working at home on their maths and having fun with their science experiment on waterproofing and which would be the most useful for making an umbrella.
  • Friday 27 March 2020 Year 2 Pupils in Year 2 have risen extremely well to the challenge of learning in a new way this week. They have read and discussed a spring poem together, written and read favourite parts of their own poems and have enjoyed carrying out some super practical work on capacity both in the kitchen and out in the sun!
  • Friday 27 March 2020 Year 4 - Science and STEM Year 4 pupils were asked to construct a free standing structure which could support a tennis ball as high as possible above the desk, using just 10 sheets of paper and sellotape as part of their studies about the skeleton.
